UPTOWN ART CLASSES

This class will introduce basic materials and traditional techniques of painting and two-dimensional design.  Geared towards beginning painting enthusiasts, students will be encouraged to create a series of images by interpreting still life, collage and portraiture.  We will use contemporary methods in paint, pencil, charcoal and ink washes to explore different image building formats.   We will explore reductive painting methods, minimalism and repetitive design ideas that help to create successful works.  This class will celebrate two-dimensional mediums that activate and inspire the imagination.

Do you have artwork that you feel could use a make-over? Maybe the results weren't expected, or it just doesn't seem “finished,” or maybe it’s just been sitting in a closet and could use an upgrade? Recycle that art! You will use you own artwork (canvas or paper) and your imagination.  Bring assorted papers, inks, paints, pencils, adhesives – whatever you have on hand.  Bring your own materials and anything you care to share with the class.

There is nothing more satisfying than creating something with your own hands.  We have all had that experience.  Remember when you drew a turkey in elementary school by tracing around your hand with a crayon, or took a water color brush full of red or blue paint and swashed it across a coloring book? It felt magical.  This course will let you feel that magic again.  Not only will you have a great time, but you will be given the knowledge and tools to create your own beautiful works of art.  Acrylic paints are the perfect media for creating abstract and nonobjective paintings.  Supply list will be sent after registration. No class September 25, October 9, and October 16.

Explore relief printing (also called block printing).  It requires very little investment in materials and does not require a press.  Instead of a stiff linoleum or wood block, we will use a smooth, soft medium that cuts easily using linoleum cutting tools, water-based inks (easy clean up!) and various transfer methods (baren, spoon, brayer).  Students will learn how to get the most impact from one color ink on white paper.  After the class, students will be able to make their own greeting cards, original rubber stamps, and original artwork suitable for framing!  Supply list distributed following registration.
