About the Show

A Songwriter’s Journey is a 60-minute cabaret show featuring the works of Jewish American composers like George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Billy Joel and, yes, Gary Negbaur.

The evening’s varied selections include Gershwin’s “Love is Here to Stay”, Kahn and Donaldson’s “Makin’ Whoopee” and a Latin jazz version of Bock and Harnick’s  “Sunrise Sunset” as well as humorous originals like “Eat at Home,” “Alphabet Love,” “Throw Some Dishes,” and “My Ex has a Wife”.

The show has been performed from New York to Paris, from Kansas City to Los Angeles. Gary Negbaur, whose musical Wine Lovers recently ran at Le Petit Theatre is thrilled to return to New Orleans for this performance. Mr. Negbaur explains, “New Orleans is the birthplace of so much of the music that I love, and I’ve performed here for years. My historical connection to this city begins with my great grandfather who entered the U.S. through this port. My grandmother later went to Sophie Newcomb College. Personally this city has always resonated for me, and I get down here as much as I can. To get to share this show with the New Orleans community is a treat. I guess you could say it’s a composer’s journey to his heritage and his heart.”

About Gary Negbaur

Pianist/singer/songwriter Gary Negbaur has been described as “up there with Harry Connick Jr.” (The Tennessean) and compared to Randy Newman and Mose Allison. He has toured across the U.S., Europe and Australia wowing audiences with his heartfelt and often humorous originals along with his innovative arrangements of standards. His recordings include a CD of original music (Let me explain), a critically acclaimed solo album of standards (Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat) and a children’s CD (Max’s Family Band).

In addition to performing, Gary writes music for theater and film, and many of his songs are performed and recorded by other singers. His interactive wine-tasting musical, Wine Lovers, (written with Michael Green and Travis Kramer) ran at Le Petit Theatre in New Orleans this past summer with tours to follow. Librarians in Love (written with Tony-nominee John Cariani) ran at the NYC Fringe Festival. He contributed music to the feature film An American Summer. His song, “Red Pontiac”, was featured on NPR's Car Talk.Gary was educated at Harvard University (where he received the David McCord Prize for unusual creative talent and a Magna Cum Laude B.A.) and the Berklee College of Music (where he was a merit scholarship recipient).
