METAIRIE

Messages to Metairie Camp Families

Wednesday, May 27, 2020

Dear Metairie Camp Families,

Our camp team is working diligently to open camp on June 15. We know that you have many questions, and we are creating new protocols to be shared in a future email. Rest assured that the health and safety of our campers and staff remain the utmost priority. A few quick updates about the camp day and program:

  • Lunch service and challah are available for purchase this summer. To purchase and select these healthy, kid-friendly lunch options by Dvash Catering, please login to CampInTouch > Forms and Documents > Additional Options. After selecting the weeks you’d like to order lunch, the Metairie Summer Lunch Menu will appear in the Forms and Documents section. Challah will also be available for purchase (see Additional Options) and distributed on Fridays. Group photos will not be available this summer.
  • Limited spaces are still available in Chaverim, Maccabee and Sabra.  If you know of a JCC member looking for a spot in summer camp, please have them contact metairiecamp@nojcc.org as soon as possible so that we can try to accommodate them.
Deadlines:
  • All camp health forms and payments must be submitted through CampInTouch by next Monday, June 1. The current CDC guidelines recommend that campers with health conditions check with the child’s physician to ensure that participation in summer camp is appropriate and safe. Please contact Phil Smith (phil@nojcc.org) if you have questions about the status of your camper’s health forms.
  • To make adjustments to or cancel your camp enrollment without penalty, please email metairiecamp@nojcc.org by June 1. You can check the status of your camper’s weeks by logging into your CampInTouch account and clicking on the Camper Information tab. After June 1, changes may be subject to a $50 fee and summer cancellations will forfeit the $100 deposit. Requests to change or drop weeks must be made to metairiecamp@nojcc.org by June 11 for weeks 2-4 and July 2 for weeks 5-8. Once camp has begun, additional weeks may be added if space is available. Dropped weeks will be subject to a $75 per week cancellation fee. If the JCC has to close a camp group for more than one day, we will offer prorated refunds.
Resources:

Safety Starts at Home! Here are some family-friendly resources to prepare your children with tools to help our campers and counselors stay healthy.

Thank you for your patience as we all adapt to these changing times. As a reminder, the JCC is closed for Shavuot on Friday, May 29. Please reach out with any questions or concerns, and we will get back to you as quickly as possible.

We look forward to seeing you all very soon!

Dear Camp Families,

While our camp team is preparing for a fantastic program, we cannot guarantee that all eight weeks of camp will run this summer season. We are closely monitoring the situation and will notify you promptly if the situation changes.

We do know that camp will look and feel very different this summer than in years past and ask your family’s patience and partnership as we adapt to these new guidelines and activity structures.

Prior to the start of camp, you will receive a complete list of updated schedules and policies. We will provide updates via email as more information becomes available. In the meantime, please note the following:

  • Drop-off and pickup procedures will be modified to include daily health screening.
  • Before care and after care will not be offered.
  • Groups will be limited to 10 campers or less. All groups will have a minimum of two counselors.
  • Each camp group will remain together for the entire day. Physical contact between groups will be limited.
  • Field trips, overnights, contact sports, and outside performances will not be offered this summer.
  • Instructional and free swim may be modified, depending on pending CDC guidelines.

If you would like to make adjustments or cancel your camp enrollment, please contact metairiecamp@nojcc.org. We appreciate your patience, as there are many moving parts and we may not be able to accommodate requests to switch the weeks you are enrolled this summer. Answers to this and other frequently asked questions are available at the bottom of this email and at nojcc.org/campfaqs. We will continue to update the FAQ webpage with new information as the situation evolves.

While there will be some changes, you can be certain that your children will have fun while building strong relationships with their counselors and fellow campers.

With hugs and love,

Your Metairie JCC Camp Directors,

Jessica and Terrance

Wednesday, May 6, 2020

Dear Metairie Camp Families,

I hope this email finds you and your loved ones in good health. As our city begins to recover from the devastating effects of Covid-19, I wanted to reach out to you regarding the impact current public health conditions will have on our summer plans at the Metairie JCC.

The coronavirus continues to dictate how our children safely congregate, play and engage in public spaces. Until more testing is made available or the virus is eradicated, the Center for Disease Control recommends reducing the size of camp groups to classrooms of 10 children or less.

At this time, if the city gives us the green light to do so, we are preparing to run a camp with the children who enrolled as of March 15, 2020. Given all the guidelines that we must adhere to, this is running camp at around 50% capacity. Unfortunately, we will not be able to run our Taglit Teen Camp this summer and all camp fees including the deposit will be returned to those families by May 31, 2020.

In making this decision, our leadership team, camp directors and executive committee sought advice from experts in the field, including the Center for Disease Control, the American Camping Association, the Redwoods Group (our risk management company) and various local and national health care professionals.

For families who registered after March 15, 2020, it is possible that we might have a spot for your child and, if that is the case, you will hear from us soon. Providing adequate classroom space, following physical distance guidelines and ensuring the health and safety of all our campers is our main priority.

Before we can open for the season, we must hear from local authorities that it is safe to do so. If we can run camp this summer, it will likely be in phase two of our city’s reopening plan. We know it will be different from summers of the past but we also know it will offer, to the extent possible, the hallmarks of JCC Summer Camp that you and your campers know and love: fun, friendship and memories that will last a lifetime.

The camp staff will reach out to you in the next day or so to answer many of your questions and address your concerns as best they can in this era of so many unknowns.

In the meantime, we send good wishes to everyone in our camp family and wishes for healing and wholeness to everyone who has been personally affected by the virus. We appreciate your patience, partnership, and on-going support, and we look forward to being in touch again when there is more information to convey

I wish you and your family a safe and good summer.

Sincerely,

Wendy Goldberg

Messages to Uptown Camp Families

Wednesday, May 27 - For Nursery School Families

Dear Uptown Camp Families,

Our camp team is working diligently to open camp on June 15. We know that you have many questions, and we are creating new protocols to be shared in a future email. Rest assured that the health and safety of our campers and staff remain the utmost priority. A few quick updates about the camp day and program:
  • Lunch service and challah are available for purchase this summer. To purchase and select these healthy, kid-friendly lunch options by Chef Dan Esses, please login to CampInTouch > Forms and Documents > Additional Options. After selecting the weeks you’d like to order lunch, the Uptown Summer Menu will appear in the Forms and Documents section. Challah will also be available for purchase (see Additional Options) and distributed on Fridays. Group photos will not be available this summer.
  • Introducing Zebra groups for the Summer of 2020!  Siblings of nursery school students who are currently enrolled and entering second grade and above have a spot with us this summer in Zebra! We anticipate having two groups of mixed grades and will do our best to segment these campers in order to maximize their peers and to foster a developmentally appropriate experience for them.
Deadlines:
  • All camp health forms and payments must be submitted through CampInTouch by next Monday, June 1. The current CDC guidelines recommend that campers with health conditions check with the child’s physician to ensure that participation in summer camp is appropriate and safe. Please contact Taylor Cooke (taylor@nojcc.org) if you have questions about the status of your camper’s health forms.
  • To make adjustments to or cancel your camp enrollment without penalty, please email uptowncamp@nojcc.org by June 1. You can check the status of your camper’s weeks by logging into your CampInTouch account and clicking on the Camper Information tab. After June 1, changes may be subject to a $50 fee and summer cancellations will forfeit the $100 deposit. Requests to change or drop weeks must be made to uptowncamp@nojcc.org by June 11 for weeks 2-4 and July 2 for weeks 5-8. Once camp has begun, additional weeks may be added if space is available. Dropped weeks will be subject to a $75 per week cancellation fee. If the JCC has to close a camp group for more than one day, we will offer prorated refunds.

Monday, May 18, 2020 - For Nursery School Families

Dear Uptown Camp Families,

We hope that this update finds everyone well as we adapt to life in Phase 1.

On Friday, the CDC released their highly anticipated childcare and camp program guidelines, which we will adopt as appropriate. For the safety of campers and staff, we are making the following program and procedural adjustments:
  • Postponed Start: Based upon current information and guidelines, we plan to begin summer camp on Monday, June 15. Camp will run for 7 weeks from June 15 - July 31. All camp fees and additional options for Week 1 (June 8 - 12) will be reversed or refunded.
  • Adjusted Camp Hours: 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM with staggered drop off and pick up. More details regarding the daily health screening procedure and updated arrival and dismissal procedures will follow in the coming weeks.
  • No Before Care or After Care at either location. With increased staffing needs, the inability to mix campers from different groups, plus a more robust cleaning process, we are not able to offer before care or after care this summer.
  • All camp health forms and payments must be submitted through CampInTouch by June 1. The current CDC guidelines recommend that campers with health conditions check with the child’s physician to ensure that participation in summer camp is appropriate and safe.

Thursday, May 7, 2020 - For Nursery School Families

Dear Families,

As you learned in the email sent earlier today, we are currently planning for a smaller camp this summer, one made of current JCC Nursery School students and their siblings who have already enrolled in camp. While our camp team is preparing for a fantastic program, the situation is fluid and we cannot guarantee that all eight weeks of camp will run this summer season. We are closely monitoring government guidelines and medical recommendations and will notify you promptly if the situation changes.

We do know that camp will look and feel different this summer than in years past and we ask for your family’s patience and partnership as we adapt to these new guidelines and activity structures. While there will be some changes, you can be certain that your children will have fun while building strong relationships with their counselors and fellow campers.

Prior to the start of camp, you will receive a complete list of our revised schedules and policies. We will provide updates via email as more information becomes available. In the meantime, please note the following:

  • Drop-off and pickup procedures will be modified to include daily health screening.
  • Camp day remains 9:00 AM - 3:15 PM. Before care (7:30 - 9:00 AM) will not be offered, but we intend to offer after care.

If you would like to make adjustments or cancel your camp enrollment, please email uptowncamp@nojcc.org. We appreciate your patience, as there are many moving parts and we may not be able to accommodate requests to switch the weeks you are enrolled this summer. Answers to frequently asked questions like this are available at the bottom of this email and at nojcc.org/campfaqs. We will continue to update the FAQ webpage with new information as the situation evolves.

We look forward to being together at the JCC for summertime fun!

Wednesday, May 6, 2020 - Community Message

Dear Uptown Camp Families,

I hope this email finds you and your loved ones in good health.

As our city begins to recover from the devastating effects of Covid-19, I wanted to reach out to you regarding the impact current public health conditions will have on our summer plans.

With a heavy heart, I regret to inform you that this summer the Uptown JCC will not be able to offer your children the summer day camp experience they have grown to love.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus continues to dictate how our children can safely congregate, play and engage in public spaces. Until more testing is made available or the virus is eradicated, the Center for Disease Control recommends reducing the size of camp groups to classrooms of 10 children or less. With over 400 campers already enrolled, we do not have adequate classroom space to provide this and other forms of social distancing necessary to ensure the health of our campers and staff. We have even explored partnering with nearby universities and schools to procure additional space, but have been unable to find adequate arrangements.

Therefore, we have decided to only provide a summer program to those 2019-2020 JCC Nursery School students and their siblings who have already enrolled in camp when and if the city gives us the green light to do so. However, with the ever-changing landscape, we are not able to make any guarantees.

In making this gut-wrenching decision, our leadership team, camp directors and executive committee sought advice from experts in the field, including the Center for Disease Control, the American Camping Association, the Redwoods Group (our risk management company) and various local and national health care professionals.

All deposits and prepaid camp fees will be returned to you by May 31, 2020.

As you know, summer camp has been one of the JCC’s most consistently successful trademark programs for over 60 years. A summer at the J without a day camp is almost unimaginable. If health conditions positively change at some point during the summer, our remarkable camp staff stands by, ready to serve your families. In the meantime, while physically distant, the camp staff is planning creative ways to stay connected to you and your children throughout the summer.

We look forward to the day we can once again open our doors to summertime fun! I wish you and your family a safe and good summer.

Sincerely,
Leslie Fischman
