Maccabi Memories & Advice for Team NOLA

Published Thursday, April 18, 2019

The countdown is on for the JCC Maccabi Games®, a week-long Olympic-style sports competition hosted in three communities each year. This year, Team NOLA will be heading to Detroit, which is also the host city for the JCC Maccabi ArtsFest®

As we approach the 2019 games and build our delegation, we thought it would be fun to catch up with a few of our past athletes. Hear from Sara, Ari, and Josh who share their Maccabi memories and advice for this year's team. Interested in joining Team NOLA? Contact Sports Director Neal Alsop.

Sara Silbert

City & Year: Atlanta, 2001
Sport: Soccer

What do you remember most about participating? What did you learn?

I remember it being a lot of fun practicing with my team in New Orleans and then traveling together to another city to compete with other teams. I also remember the fun social events, trading pins and making friends with people from other cities.

Do you have any advice for Team NOLA for 2019?

Have fun and make NOLA proud!

Ari Marks

City & Years: Charlotte (1999), Boca (2000), and Houston (2001)
Sports: Basketball (1999) and racquetball (1999-2001)
Awards: Double gold and double silver in racquetball

What do you remember most about participating? What did you learn?

I remember being very interested (the plethora) in all of the Jewish girls my age.

Do you have any advice for Team NOLA for 2019?

It's a busy day and you'll be exhausted by the end of the night, so rest up.

Joshua Murray

City & Year: Phoenix (2006), Houston (2007), San Diego (2008), San Francisco (2009)
Sport: Basketball
Awards: Silver (2007)

What do you remember most about participating? What did you learn?

The quality of players is more important than the quantity. We played against and beat huge Jewish metropolitans such as Houston, North Miami Beach, Cincinnati, and St. Louis just to name a few. In 2007 we eventually lost in the championship to a San Francisco team, with a player who went on to play Division 1 basketball at Colombia University.

Do you have any advice for Team NOLA for 2019?

Go the games with a mindset that Maccabi is a once in a lifetime experience. You are there to have fun and meet Jewish athletes from all over the world. Remember to take pride in the fact you are representing the whole Jewish community of not only New Orleans but the whole metro area. Stay focused on the task at hand which is to represent your region to the best of your ability. Also, make sure to thank your parents for sacrificing the time and money to allow you to have the opportunity to travel to Detroit. It will be an experience you will look back on when you’re older and wish you could do it one more time as an athlete.
