Following the New Orleans JCC's facility closure due to COVID-19, staff members have been working around the clock to transition regular programming and services into a virtual format.
"Although we cannot be physically present for you during this time, we are quickly adapting and learning new ways to foster community and stay connected," said Executive Director Leslie Fischman in a letter to members. "Our staff has done a great job this past week transitioning nursery school lessons to a digital format, fitness classes into live streams, ballet lessons to video, and more."
One example is Uptown Assistant Camp Director Brigid MacArthur-Thompson's live dance party for camp families. Utilizing the newly created JCC Camp Facebook Group, Brigid logged into Facebook Live and led camp families through favorite dances like "I Get Loose" and "All I Eat Is Pizza." Not only was Brigid's live dance party popular online with JCC campers, but it was also picked up by local New Orleans CBS affiliate. WWL reporter Mike McDaniel spotted the dance party in action while running on St. Charles Avenue and quickly stopped to ask permission to film. The story aired on Monday, March 23 and featured an interview with Brigid as well as JCC member Leah Glade, whose kids tuned into the dance party live at home.
“People just really want to have some happy things right now and they want to be reminded of good times,” Brigid said in the interview.
As the world adjusts to sheltering in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the New Orleans JCC will continue to adapt in order to support members and the community as a whole.
