

In 2012, when Advance Publishing Company announced that the New Orleans Times-Picayune would cease publication 7 days a week, it seemed that yet another great American city would lose its remaining daily newspaper. And, while the comeback story of the New Orleans Advocate/ Times-Picayune was a hit, the next sequel might be more somber.
In this talk, Vicki Mayer, Professor of Communications at Tulane, will go behind the headlines of what happened to newspapers in the United States and where they are heading. New Orleans is both an outlier and harbinger of what could happen if we disinvest in a local newspaper and a free and fair press. As we click and scroll on our smartphones and head to Nola.com, we have to ask ourselves if the ‘marketplace of ideas’ is really working for us, and how we can fight for future journalism.
