CITs (or Counselors-in-Training) are an essential part of New Orleans JCC Summer Camp. The goal of the program is to provide a comprehensive leadership training program to rising 9th and 10th graders, where teens learn through workshops, mentorship, and child-care experience.
This experience provides our 9th and 10th grade community members the opportunity to enhance their professional skills and build a toolkit of games, activities, and problem solving strategies that will help them become strong leaders and program facilitators. The opportunity for goal setting, self reflection, and trial and error are built into the sequence of the summer-long program to allow each participant to reach their own personal goals.
Not only do our CITs gain valuable leadership skills throughout the course of the program, they also have a memorable and fun summer experience. Our CITS get to participate in camp activities (including field trips), bond with campers and staff, and participate in CIT-only bonding events (like pizza parties, laser tag, and more).
CITs are a unique cohort at camp as they are no longer considered campers and are not fully staff members. While participation and completion of the CIT program does not automatically result in future employment at JCC Summer Camps, evaluations are used in the future process and returning CITS and staff are given priority in the interview process on a yearly basis. CITs with one year of experience may be invited to apply as a junior counselors as a rising 10th grader at the discretion of the camp director.
