Intergenerational opportunities

Grand Friends Program

The Early Childhood Center will partner with the Active Adult Volunteer Program to foster healthy intergenerational relationships built around unique and accessible programming. The Grand Friends Program will work specifically to build long-term, more targeted relationships between the children and the older adults in the Jewish community. Each child will be paired with a Grand Friend who they will meet with once a month for different activities and programs. Programs will be geared towards the seasons and the holidays that fall around the scheduled visits.

To continue the blossoming relationships between the older adults and ECC children, the older adults will be invited to school-wide events to participate if they would like. This will give families a chance to participate in the program as well as create moments of celebration for the older adults.

Parameters:

  • Children will be paired 1:1, 2:1 or 3:1 with older adults
  • Classes will meet monthly with their Grand Friend pairings
  • Classes will meet individually
  • Grandparents of children in the program will not be assigned to their class or grandchildren

Grand Sharing Program

The Early Childhood Center will partner with the older adult program to foster healthy intergenerational relationships built around unique and accessible programming. The Grand Sharing Program will foster relationships between the older adults in our program and the entire ECC. Older adults will be invited to come into classrooms to share different parts of their lives. The older adults involved in our programming will be given the opportunity to sign up for different sharing sessions that pertain to their interests.

To continue the blossoming relationships between the older adults and ECC children, the older adults will be invited to school-wide events to participate if they would like. This will give families a chance to participate in the program as well as create moments of celebration for the older adults.

Parameters:

  • Each class will participate in a grand share once a month.
  • Older adults will be given a list of the monthly sharing prompts and can sign up for different classes.
  • Prompts will become more involved as the year goes on
  • Older adults will prepare something having to do with the prompt and bring it into their class
  • Sharing sessions will be scheduled to be followed by music classes so that older adults can stay in the room and participate if they would like.
  • Grandparents of children in the program will not be assigned to their class or grandchildren.

ECC Garden Care

The Early Childhood Center will partner with the Active Adult Program to foster healthy, intergenerational relationships built around unique and accessible programming. The JCC community garden will be a space on the ECC playground where our students and older adult volunteers can work together to grow and maintain flowers, fruits, and vegetables. The garden will have scheduled blocks for when the older adults are invited to tend to it. These visits will be scheduled during outside time for our classes so that our children can participate in the work naturally and at their own pace.

To continue the blossoming relationships between the older adults and ECC children, the older adults will be invited to school-wide events to participate if they would like. This will give families a chance to participate in the program as well as create moments of celebration for the older adults.

Parameters:

  • The garden base will be started at a community-wide event where ECC families and Older Adults within the community can come together on a weekend to build the garden and plant the beginning of the plants. Music will be played, and refreshments will be offered.
  • A gardening club meeting should be held by the older adult program members involved to discuss the needs of the garden and come up with a more detailed list of supplies
  • The garden will have blocks throughout the week where older adults can sign up to tend to the garden.
  • Kids playing on the playground will be encouraged to help the older adults work on the garden.
  • On days when the garden needs to be watered, and there is no work block set up for older adult visitors, the classrooms will be expected to water the plants.
  • If the garden begins to grow vegetables, they will be given to Chef Jeff to be incorporated into snack time for the kids.
  • Classes can also decorate signs to mark the items growing in the garden.
